UP Experience in Houston 2012

Laura Koch and Barbara Corcoran

Laura and I attended the UP Experience in Houston 2012 last week.  For the past several years, a friend of mine had encouraged me to go.  I finally decided to take his advice and sign up and I’m glad I did!

UP Experience in Houston 2012

Over the course of the day, there were over sixteen speakers who were leaders in their field. We heard topics from new battery technology to gaming theory. One of the most inspiring speakers was Marcus Luttrell, the author of Lone Survivor. Out of the day I came away with a few trends and ideas.

  • The key to living longer is to seek out new experiences and novelty.
  • The 80+ age group is the fastest growing demographic group.
  • Key to avoiding Alzheimer disease is to eat fish and lower your blood pressure.
  • Marcus Luttrell: “See what you will become not what you are!”, “Have a Never Quit Attitude no matter how many times you fail!”
  • Barbara Corcoran: “Be great at failure; Perception creates reality; There are two kinds of people, expanders and containers; Fun is good for business; Fun is the birthplace of creativity.”
  • Gary Vaynerchuk: “The goal of social media is to develop an online relationship with your customer; Information and data are becoming a commodity; Give away intellectual property to open up opportunities.”
  • Tony Danza: “For education to be effective students have to be convinced to take ownership of their education.”

The most important benefit of the day was getting away from the office and sharing ideas with the other attendees. I definitely plan to attend the UP Experience in Houston 2013. I hope you will too!

Great overview to a great day! The whole day was truly an experience, I still don’t think I have come down from it. Very inspiring!

Is it possible to be considered as a “speaker” for the 2013 UP EXPERIENCE? I am a retired teacher/counselor/staff trainer from the Florida Dept. of Corrections (DeSoto State Prison, Arcadia, Fla.) where for 17 years I was sent to almost every Florida state prison to do workshops with the V.I.P. (Violence Interruption Process) program based on showing how to avoid using provocative language that incites/provokes others. I organized hundreds of potentially explosive individuals TOGETHER(!) in one big area (gymnasium, dining hall, etc.)…diverse groups that absolutely hated each other (correctional officers, inmate gang members from every gang imaginable) Blacks, Whites, Latinos, Neo-Nazis…you name it, they were there! Believe it, or not, (believe it!!!) there was not one single violent act whatsoever during the entire 17 years, although there were some pretty close encounters! I was able to keep everyone relatively calm, even the hard core individuals. If someone got out of control he was given a warning to be cool, if not, then would be physically removed from the area. The beauty of the V.I.P. program is that it may be used anywhere: public schools (for anti-bullying programs) the workplace, corpor- -ations, sports teams, domestic violence solutions, and anywhere diverse individ-
-uals of opposing views gather with the potential of words escalating to violence! I
encourage audience participation in a very simple format that is totally convincing, even if there is doubt of it being successful! I witnessed correctional officers and hard core inmates hugging each other and crying on many occasions at the conclusion of the prison workshops!!! Imagine? If the V.I.P. may work in a prison setting then why not elsewhere? Could you PLEASE consider me to present this to you and the UP EXPERIENCE audience? I will gladly answer any questions that you may have, give you my credentials to check out, excellent professional/personal references including my California Security Officer license number (I was cleared by the Dept. of Justice in 2007, my current license is valid until Nov. 2013)…thank you very much!…Sincerely and Very Grateful, Michael Joseph Goldberg, PO Box 41904, Santa Barbara, CA 805-403-0378.
