Identify Your Culture &  The Traits of Your Top Performers

Who are the most successful people in your company? What do they have in common?

Truly successful organizations have a common trait that they look for in prospective employees and foster in current employees. This trait is defined by the culture of the organization.

Identifying your company’s culture and nurturing those traits that support the culture is critical to building and maintaining a winning team.

Fewer, Better People

With the prevalence of technological advances across all industries, many routine jobs are being automated. A typical reaction to this trend is to reduce headcount.

A recent Wall Street Journal article highlighted this very fact:

Mr. Siu [the researcher referenced in the article] thinks jobs have been taken away by automation, more than by outsourcing. While some manufacturing jobs have clearly gone overseas, “it’s hard to offshore a secretary.” These tasks more likely became unnecessary due to improving technology, he said.

While automation almost always leads to the need for fewer people, it’s important for businesses to realize that the people they now need are different. They need people to analyze, not just input, the data.

Right People, Right Jobs

Are there some people in your organization that you feel aren’t living up to their potential? Perhaps the problem is one of fit. Even the most talented employee is limited if the work they are doing isn’t the right fit for them. Consider moving these people to a part of the company where their gifts would be better utilized.

You might be surprised that your accounting manager has a passion and a talent for marketing that isn’t being tapped into. Be open to allowing your best people to take on tasks outside of their job description.

Hire for Talent, Train for Skills

Obviously, hiring the right people in the first place eliminates a lot of headaches. Problems arise when a business doesn’t carefully define what the “right” person looks like. Often, they get caught up in a particular skill set they believe a job requires. Then they lose sight of a better indicator of success – talent.RI-MYUNG-HUN

Talent is that innate quality that transcends skill. It’s something that a person either has or doesn’t have.

You can’t teach talent. Look around your organization for those people that everyone goes to when they need something done. They are the ones with talent.

The True Definition of Entrepreneur

What is the true definition of entrepreneur? Some say that it is a person who runs a business at his own financial risk and others may say it is someone who organizes and manages any enterprise. However do those “textbook” definitions truly define an entrepreneur in this day and age? Technically yes, but an entrepreneur is simply more than that.

An entrepreneur is a personality that you find in someone. The definition of entrepreneur cannot be merely defined by a conglomeration of words and phrases. After meeting an entrepreneur personally one can actually understand the definition of entrepreneur because it gives substance to the term. In a general sense, all entrepreneurs are a master of none but superior to the average in aspects of business. However, they are unique in their own way. Not one entrepreneur operates in the same way or possesses equal traits. That’s why it is difficult to define an entrepreneur.

It is an entrepreneurial mindset that one possesses which really creates the true meaning of entrepreneur. So if you get the chance, I would highly recommend spending time around a successful entrepreneur to really grasp the concept.

Traits of a Successful Entrepreneur

How do you know if you possess the traits of a successful entrepreneur? You may have entrepreneurial traits that come naturally. Entrepreneurs are passionate to the highest degree. “No” is not an acceptable answer because the level of drive you possess is naturally higher than the median. An entrepreneur gets things done and loves to be competitive in the process. A true entrepreneur is not predictable, one that possesses a certain creativity level that allows one self to see and produce “ahead of the curve”. However, without strong people skills, an entrepreneur cannot be successful alone.

People Skills

People skills are underrated in this aspect and can decide whether or not you are meant to be a successful entrepreneur. Not a single person wakes up on any given day and decides to be an entrepreneur on a whim. These people have distinct entrepreneurial traits that make them tick a certain way and that’s what makes one an entrepreneur. That is why they stray from the average and stick out in their own creative manner.

In this current era, entrepreneurs are constantly innovating their traits. They don’t change them but, in a sense, they update their qualities by adoption and modification to create fresh ideas that stay ahead of the curve. Continuous learning is one of the key traits of entrepreneurship. Not by simply reading articles or following up on some of the master entrepreneurs, but actually implementing these entrepreneurial concepts. Successful entrepreneurs never stop learning; because once you think you know it all is the moment you get left behind the entrepreneurial curve.


Awareness is another vital trait of successful entrepreneurs. If you can obtain the indicators of a recession in your market by extensive research of the market trends then by all means do it. Keeping tabs on these indicators is vital to the survival and overall health of your business. The next trait of successful entrepreneurs posses is consistent brainstorming. All epic ideas are a product of some type of brainstorming. As a business entrepreneur one cannot simply rely on ideas you have taken from others. Effective entrepreneurs are constantly writing down new ideas that catch their attention. These entrepreneurial traits are vital to being a successful entrepreneur and can pave the way to being a successful entrepreneur.

Most companies identify the skills they need for a particular job and then hire a candidate that already possess the skills they need. It is important for a company to know how to recruit talented employees as opposed to skilled ones.

Determine the Job, Then Find the Person!

In today’s job market companies are inundated with job candidates. Many are extremely talented and skilled. Unfortunately, they may be over-qualified when recruiting a winning team. Consequently, the company spends an enormous amount of time trying to find a position for the candidate. So how do organizations decide how to recruit the best employees for a certain job? Often they redefine the job position to fit the candidate’s skills not what the organization needs to be successful. To build a winning team, you should determine the role to be filled and focus on filling that role.

Don’t Hire Someone You Wouldn’t Eat Lunch With!

If a candidate doesn’t fit in well with the team members, then the team’s performance is in jeopardy. So what is the best way to recruit employees so that they can fit in with existing personnel? When interviewing a candidate you should have them meet one on one with four or five team members. They should meet with both supervisors and subordinates. Finally have someone go to lunch or breakfast with the candidate. If you can’t eat a meal with someone, then how are you going to work well under stress? When recruiting a winning team, it is important to understand that the team members must work well together!

If You Know the Last Chapter, Get There

Face it! We all make mistakes in hiring. The question is how to deal with it. If you know that someone is not a good hire then address the issue immediately. Work out a fair severance package and move on. The longer you delay, the more damage is being done to your team and the farther you are away from recruiting winners.
